SILVER LAKE PARK, Rochester, MN
In 1962, a small flock of giant Canada Geese was found enjoying Minnesota winters at beautiful Silver Lake Park. Prior to 1950, the species was believed to be extinct. These geese, donated by a Mayo clinic patient, lured some of the few remaining giant Canada Geese to Rochester. Improved game laws and habitat restoration have brought the species back to life. Today, Rochester's goose population numbers 30,000 to 35,000 during the peak of fall migration. The Branta canadensis maxima (translation: Giant Canada Geese) are big. With a wingspan of up to 6 feet and weight of up to 14 pounds the geese are a sight to behold. The males and females have different “honks” and the females are typically lighter in color. Visiting and feeding the geese at Silver Lake has become a beloved tradition for many residents and visitors. The special flock has become an integral part of the Rochester community. Due to concerns of overpopulation, the Silver Lake Buffer Project is installing 30-foot-wide vegetative buffers of native grasses and plants in an attempt to clean up the water. Once the five-year project is complete, the buffers will act as filters to reduce the amount of pollution that reaches the lake. Visitors will be discouraged from feeding the geese in the future, they remain one of Rochester's prized attractions. The magnificent creatures add a touch of magic to an evening walk around the lake.

The lake also offers trails for biking and walking, fishing piers, paddleboats, and canoes. the park is complete with summertime canoe and paddle boat rentals, bike and walking trails, picnic grounds, play equipment, tennis courts and a swimming pool. North Broadway and 13th Street.

The outside walls feature battle graphics from the Civil War to the Gulf War and the inside walls are engraved with stories of important military events from the Revolutionary War to the Gulf War. Educational markers that show the history and proper etiquette of the American Flag stand inside of the memorial. A statue of a mother and child sits in front of the Wall and statues of a nurse and a medic treating a wounded soldier to the rear of the Wall of Remembrance. The logos of the Military Academies are engraved on the rear of the Wall. There is a small complex featuring a statue of a WWII soldier at the corner of 6th St. and 2nd Ave S.W., the entrance to the memorial.

Cannons from the Gulf War and World War I are on display. Focal point of the Memorial is a granite wall twelve feet high by fifty one feet long that contains the names of over 2,300 people, from S.E. Minnesota, that died as a result of injuries sustained in the service from the Civil War to the present. www.soldiersfieldmemorial.org

TREMPEALEAU, WI
Among the best places to go in Wisconsin, Treampealeau is located on the west central part of the state, on a scenic riverside site at the base of the Tempealeau bluffs on the east bank of the Mississippi River. Native American burial mounds indicate the people lived in the Trempealeau vicinity for hundreds of years before the first French explores camped in the area in the late 1600's. The locality was named for the distinctive geological landmark called Trempealeau Mountain, which is located just upriver in Perrot State Park. Area Indians referred to the water-surrounded bluffs as the “Mountain soaking in the water,” which the French translated as “La Montagne qui trempe a l'eau:” hence Trempealeau pronounced trem-pillow).

Long before the designation of Perrot State Park, Trempealeau was already on the list of places to go in Wisconsin. Trempealeau village began during the early 1840's as a fur trading center and Mississippi River landing. In 1852 the small village was platted and named Montoville as the surrounding area was settled and farms established. In 1856, the village was renamed Trempealeau and grew rapidly, as numerous warehouses and other businesses grew up along the riverfront creating a booming commercial district served by many Mississippi riverboats. The first rail line was built through Trempealeau in 1871 which temporarily gave Trempealeau two options for shipping flour and other goods, but ultimately led to an end of the dominance of steamboats in the Mississippi River commerce. A second rail line was built in 1887, this time along the riverfront, but Trempealeau still lagged far behind the growth of the other Mississippi River towns like Red Wing, Winona and La Crosse.

Trempealeau's Main Street that you see today is significant because of the similarity in scale and design of both the brick and wood frame buildings and the presence of two outstanding buildings: the Queen Anne commercial style EJ Hankey building and the Prairie style Citizens State Bank building. The Trempealeau Main street Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1984.

Winona, Minnesota, is one of the most beautiful places on earth, nestled between the covered limestone river bluffs rising 500 feet and the stunning mighty Mississippi River. The historical architecture and cultural opportunities give Winona a soul that is living, breathing and growing. Still, Winona and its wealth of lodging, shopping and culture is relatively undiscovered.

Winona was founded in 1851 by a steamboat captain. Positioned on a large island in Mississippi, the lumber industry helped it grow quickly and by 1900, Winona had more millionaires per capita than any place in the United States. Winona's history lives on in architecturally significant historic buildings and vintage homes that thrill history buffs.

Today, Winona is driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit that has given birth to a city that has built its future by embracing its past. There is a strong arts movement, abundant shopping comfortable lodging and a variety of restaurants.

In may ways Winona is still an island in the wilderness waiting to be discovered again. Eagles fly overhead, deer sleep in yards and on the outskirts of Winona you can hear the sound of coyotes on still summer nights-all this is waiting for you. Make your plans today to discover Winona, the historic island city on the Mississippi.
